A step back in time to an era when everyone travelled by train. Nostalgia for older visitors and a novel but educational experience for children. This is Australias largest and oldest railway museum, with over 125 railway exhibits representing the development of the NSW Railways from the late 1800 to the present day. Visitors can see inside carriages and engine cabs. Popular displays include steam locomotives dating from 1865 to 1957, the most powerful steam locomotive ever used in Australia, early diesel and electric engines, a prison van, horse box, sleeping cars and mail van, plus other special displays. Guided tours are available on Sundays and other days by arrangement. Schools and groups welcome. Steam hauled heritage trains operate on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month between March and November with a 50 minute round trip from Thirlmere to Buxton. Steam trains may not operate on fire-ban days, we recommend you ring to check 1st.

Open 7days. 9am - 4pm weekdays, 9am - 5pm weekends.
